Suburbia Is Calling

Barbed Magazine presents a call for submissions for the sixth issue, entitled "Suburbia is Calling," to be published in Spring 2018.

The primary idea for the upcoming issue is the elimination of “city limits,” figuratively speaking. Initial thoughts were conceived from conversations about the definition of a “Detroit artist.” Some artists shared frustration with feeling like an outsider because they live in suburbs.

In this issue, we will explore how the interchange of physical spaces influences artists and their work; for example, how does moving from the city to the suburbs affect the artistic process and output?

“Suburbia Is Calling” is a significant expansion undertaken by Barbed Magazine. The project will start with a limited edition of printed copies this Spring along with an online version. It will then be expanded to site-specific performances in neighborhood locations like swimming pools, local corner stores, and block tours. Throughout the remainder of the year, there will be discussions guided by local artists from within Detroit and its neighborhoods.

Although “Suburbia Is Calling” is the theme for Issue #6 of Barbed, artists are invited to submit work that is not limited to this subject matter. Instead, the focus of the issue is the artists themselves, their location, and how their art is making a change in their neighborhoods.

Issue #6 will, as usual, include studio visits from local Metro Detroit artists, and curated works chosen from the call for submissions. The new issue will be available online and in selected galleries around the city and California.

Artists are invited to submit works created within the last two years. These could include works in progress, documentation, continuing series, and experimental pieces. There will be a significant emphasis on artists living in the Metro Detroit region, including Windsor--particularly those classified as emerging artists or from minority demographics.

Artists selected for inclusion in this issue will receive a complimentary copy of the magazine, and an artist’s fee* (pending confirmation from granting funds).

Submission Instructions:

- Please submit 1-5 images of your work along with a brief statement of 150 - 300 words. This should include an artist's statement and a description of the work being submitted.
-All material should be sent electronically to hola@artdossier.us with the subject line: Barbed Sixth Issue – Suburbia is Calling.
File formats accepted: JPG, PDF, PSD, TIFF.
Deadline for submissions: February 28, 2018 (midnight).
